About: Trails Edge Knives

My name is Dylan Broeke and I am the maker of Trails Edge Knives. I have always liked both knives and edged tools and I remember the first knife I really had which was a bright orange 'paramedic' folding knife that was half surrated and complete with a glass breaker and sealt belt cutter. Soon after, I got a browning folding knife with a liner lock that I carried for years. That first love of knives started the drive I have today. I have always liked making things and I also make many rings and jewelry in all sorts of designs. In 2020, I decided I wanted to make a knife that I could carry on my belt and replace the browning I was carrying, so I made the knife that is pictured behind this text. I had extremly limited tools and nothing on this knife is done correct, but after I was finished, the sense of acomplishment I felt was unmatched. It was difficult to keep making everything as I was at university getting a BSc in Geography. As such, I was only ever able to be in my shop for 4 months a year, meaning progress was slow. In mid-2023 I finally graduated and moved my shop to have access to my tools year round, letting my creativity finally go free. The steel of my first knife pictured is a mystery damascus billit from Amazon, the scales are padauk, the pins are cut off nails, and I used super glue to hold the scales on the tang. There is a crack in the spine, and it is heat treated so poorly, it has an incredibly uneven etch. All the mistakes aside, I very quickly fell in love with knife making and kept making blade after blade, each time getting better. For several years I used a 1x30 belt grinder, a small paint can forge, and hand files, until today where I have invested in a proper 2x72 grinder, heat treating oven, and proper equipment. In 2022, I developed the business "CoastalEDC" as I wanted to make EDC knives, pens, notebooks, pocket treasures, and more. The term Coastal was because this business originated on the Sunshine Coast in BC, Canada. As I kept making primarily knives, I decided to change my business name to fit the style of knives I was making which was turning into more bushcraft, hunting, hiking, and camping knives. As such, from countless hours of brainstorming and googling to see what was taken, I created Trails Edge Knives which ties perfectly with my Jewelry business, Stainless Edge Studios. In 2023, Trails Edge Knives was born, and has been growing ever since.
